About the Workshop

Instructor of Drumming FUNdamentals, Yeeman Mui, has dedicated herself in trying to push the boundaries of what the art of taiko means. Through her workshop, students will explore the art of taiko utilizing the Orff approach, which includes the usage of movement drama, games, and singing. Workshop participants will learn the basics of “kuchishoga” (which is the verbal and visual language used to study various rhythms and arrangements of taiko drumming), and will be taught key fundamentals of taiko drumming through the Orff approach through compositions and arrangements by Yeeman Mui.

The workshop series, Drumming FUNdamentals, was first introduced to music teachers in Macau in 2015. It then traveled to the taiko community and music teachers in Los Angeles and Washington D.C. in 2016, and will be featured at the North American Taiko Conference in San Diego in August 2017.

Since graduating from San Francisco International Orff, her vision is to continually find new ways to celebrate the essence of teaching of taiko through the mind, body and spirit. In 2012 and 2013, she was awarded a fellowship to study with taiko master, Kenny Endo, at the Taiko Center of the Pacific (TCP).  She was also a lead teacher for the Youth Program at the North American Taiko Conference in Las Vegas 2015.  Currently, ManMan is a music teacher at Punahou School in Honolulu, Hi. There, she utilizes the Orff approach to teach 4th and 5th grade students. In May 2017, she directed their yearly Spring concert, “Rhythm of Life”, that featured two hundreds 4th grade students which showcased the integration of the arts of taiko and Orff ideologies.
